STEM-Based ‘Unpoppable’ Balloon
Looking for a quick and easy project to beat the summer blues? This ‘unpoppable’ STEM-based project is sure to delight and add an educational twist to any summer day. Based on the principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, the project examines the role of polymers in rubber.
Supplies:
- Balloon Time Helium Tank
- Clear latex balloons
- A sharp, wooden skewer
- Dish soap

Instructions:
- Inflate the clear balloon. Be sure the balloon isn’t longer than the length of the skewer.
- Dab a small amount of dish soap on the ‘button’ of thick rubber on the top of the balloon and at the bottom of the balloon where it is tied.
- Hold the balloon steady on a table.
- Help your kiddo gently twist the skewer as you begin to push it into the balloon and through to the other side.
- Discuss why the balloon did not pop—what is the role of the dish soap in preventing the balloon from exploding when the skewer pierced it?
