Influencer Interview: Kelly Mindell of Studio DIY

Studio-DIY-Balloon-Shop-1

Undoubtedly one of the most colorful and creative people we know, Kelly Mindell of Studio DIY knows how to throw a party for every occasion (or for no occasion at all!). We caught up with her recently to find out where her creativity comes from and get some hot party planning tips.

Balloon Time: How did you come to be your current crafty self?

Studio DIY: I was always doing crafts as a kid. I have four brothers and they all played all the sports so I did crafts while I sat on all the sidelines of their games. I was also always starting fun side projects with my friends. We had a paper crafts business and would sell our creations on the side of the road, lemonade-stand style! I think I was always headed towards a creative entrepreneur career, but it didn’t click that I could run my own creative business until later on.

BT: Who (or what) is your biggest inspiration when it comes to what you do?

SD: This is a tough one for me to answer. My eyeballs are constantly in tune with what’s around me so inspiration can strike anywhere. What’s been really fun as my team has grown is getting to have group brainstorm sessions where we all play off of each other’s inspirations and come up with some really awesome ideas!

BT: What’s the most memorable party you’ve ever been to?

SD: Am I allowed to say our wedding? Haha. It was a TON of work to plan, but was hands-down the most fun I’ve ever had!

BT: What’s something about you that we might be surprised by?

SD: When I was growing up I wanted to be a cathouse designer. Ha! Bet you didn’t see that one coming.

BT: What do you hope shines through in your work?

SD: That I really do love what I do and each project is something I’m genuinely into and want to share.

BT: Best piece of advice you ever received?

SD: Stay true to yourself. It’s very easy to see what someone else is doing and how successful they are at it, and emulate them. But in the end, if you aren’t being true to yourself, that’s going to wear on you heavily and your audience will quickly see through it.

BT: What are your top five party-hosting tips?

  1. Always have plenty of snacks! It gives guests something to do and you don’t have to worry about anyone being hungry.
  2. Do as much as you can ahead of time. Nobody wants to be running around the day-of!
  3. Make a great playlist! Music helps set the vibe for the whole party.
  4. Decorate with balloons! They’re inexpensive and make a big impact.
  5. Don’t forget dessert! It’s the best part of a party, right??
